Getting to know EEGLAB

Install EEGLAB, open your first dataset, and meet the place your data lives: the EEG structure.

6 lessons: 3 core, 3 recommended

After this station you can:

  • Install EEGLAB and add a plugin

4 questions. Your score stays with you and isn't sent anywhere.

1. You need the Biosig plugin to read an EDF file. Where do you install it inside EEGLAB?
Show the answer

The correct answer: File > Manage EEGLAB extensions

The extension manager is in the File menu: search for Biosig and click Install/Update; it needs an internet connection. Edit > Preferences holds EEGLAB options, not plugins.

2. The command size(EEG.data) prints 32 30504. What do the two numbers mean?
Show the answer

The correct answer: 32 channels, and 30504 samples per channel

In EEGLAB channels are rows and samples are columns. So EEG.data(1, :) is the whole first channel, and EEG.data(:, 1) is all channels at the first sample.

3. Which statements about the fields of EEG are true? (Select all that apply)
Show the answer

The correct answer: EEG.srate is the sampling rate in Hz, EEG.event(1).latency is the event time in samples, not seconds, EEG.trials = 1 means continuous data

EEG.times is in milliseconds, while EEG.xmin and EEG.xmax are in seconds. EEG.icaweights stays empty until you compute ICA in station 4. To convert a latency to seconds: (sample number − 1) ÷ sampling rate.

4. In the main window: Frames per epoch = 30504, Sampling rate (Hz) = 128, and Epochs = 1. About how long is the recording?
Show the answer

The correct answer: 238 seconds, about 4 minutes

Frames per epoch is a sample count, not seconds. Divide it by the sampling rate: 30504 ÷ 128 ≈ 238 seconds, roughly the number on the Epoch end (sec) line.
